Buhari’s victory, Igbo should prepare for 2023 – Imo monarch

Ihim who spoke to newsmen in Owerri, said that he was justified in his call for Ndigbo to back Buhari’s second term, agenda. He also pleaded with Buhari to use his re-election for another four years to address the issues which Nigerians bitterly complained.

The Imo monarch, highlighted some of the areas, the Buhari’s administration needed to give immediate attention, “Regular power supply; job creation; security, improved ICT; agricultural revolution as well as sustaining the war against corruption.

It was his view that Southeast region should stop playing “clannish” style of politics and that it was for this reason the region has continued to suffer politically compared to other geo-political regions in the country.

He recalled that, “Igbos have not learnt anything from the political mistake they made in 1979 by given maximum support to NPP instead of NPN as a national party as well as in 2015 when the political wind of change was blowing in favour of APC but they stick to PDP despite her glaring dwindling fortune and similarly when the Presidential odds favoured APC in 2019.

He further said: “I was abused by some eminent Igbo sons and daughters, some politicians after insulting me even cast aspersions on me, all because of my support for Buhari and his administration, some of them accused me of being anti-Igbo. I was highly misunderstood.

“The truth is that I am a man that sees tomorrow, I understand Nigeria politics, the intrigues and the power play. I have worked, done businesses and lived in virtually all the geo-political regions of the country, so I know the peoples mind sets.

“That Buhari won his closet rival, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of PDP with over 3.5 million votes, shows that President Buhari is still popular. Our people were deceived by the antics of the social media.

“All over the world no conduct of an election have been declared perfect and that if proper investigations are carried out you will discover that all the major contenders are guilty of one of the electoral offences or the other.”

On his thinking about Nigeria having a president of Igbo extraction, Ohanwe said: “Ndigbo should start now to strategize ahead of 2023 and be committed in bridge building and weeping of sentiment so that it will be easy to get Nigerian President of Igbo extraction then.

“I advised President Buhari not to discriminate against any ethnic group as he promised in his presidential victory speech and to run an all inconclusive administration.Buhari should use his second tenure to correct the wrongs people complained of and give priority attention to issues.”

Chelsea boo boys as Blues resurgence continues

All eyes were on Kepa Arrizabalaga, recalled for Chelsea‘s clash with Fulham, to see if he had the mental strength to bounce back from his recent “big mistake” in the Carabao Cup final. But it was match-winner Jorginho who most silenced his critics, scoring a beautiful goal in Sunday’s 2-1 victory.

His first goal from open play under Maurizio Sarri was a reward for a midfielder booed at Stamford Bridge by his own fans recently, but who should be increasingly winning them over after three strong performances in a row.

Fifteen kilometres of running in 120 minutes against Manchester City saw him get picked out by opposition manager Pep Guardiola as a top performer, despite his penalty miss costing Sarri his first-ever trophy as a manager after the 0-0 stalemate at Wembley.

Jorginho is seen as pivotal to Chelsea by Sarri. Despite criticism that he lacks the physicality to operate as a defensive midfielder in the Premier League, he was pivotal against top four rivals Tottenham on Wednesday, which the Blues won 2-0 under immense pressure after the Kepa-stained theatrics at the weekend.

Another 12km of running underpinned a top defensive display against Spurs, where Jorginho pulled off the most interceptions, tackles and regained possession more than anyone else for his side at Stamford Bridge.

Gonzalo Higuain had reacted sharply to put the Blues into the lead early in the first half before Calum Chambers, on-loan from Arsenal, scored unmarked from a cross to level the game in the 27th minute. Jorginho’s strike four minutes put Chelsea back in front, curling an Eden Hazard pass from the edge of the area past Fulham goalkeeper Sergio Rico.

It is no surprise that improvements from the Blues midfielder came after Chelsea’s resurgence from an awful winter period that saw Sarri at risk of being sacked early into his tenure on the club’s bench.

Jorginho has been a big part of Chelsea’s form stabilising, as the midfield pass-master becomes more comfortable in English football and among his new colleagues. A 69th-minute substitution was needed though after a busy period, but also after he was fortunate to be only booked for a dirty tackle on the rapid wonderkid Ryan Sessegnon.

Jose Mourinho, doing punditry on the west London derby for BeIn Sport, recognised why there’s a mystique over the midfielder’s style of play.

“Jorginho is a good player, but he is different than any other midfielder in Chelsea throughout their history,” the two-time former Chelsea boss said. “That is why they criticise him but it is because the fans do not like the new style. I think the problem is not about Jorginho but about the style.”

However, Chelsea’s past seven days has seen most of the focus on summer signing Kepa, who will be remembered for some time as the goalkeeper who refused to be substituted in the Carabao Cup final. Kepa looked unfazed by the attention and looked more lost by windy conditions at Fulham, as he got away with a big mistake early in the first half when Ryan Babel failed to spot him spill the ball. However, the saga around him should be broadly put to bed now, as the 24-year-old’s team-mates rally around him to ensure he is capable of delivering displays as Chelsea’s record £71 million ($92m) signing.

In fact, it should have been plain sailing in the final minutes with the chances created by the Blues, but they needed to lean on their goalkeeper for some game-changing moments. Most memorably, Aleksandar Mitrovic could have equalised with two minutes left on the clock if not for a super save from Kepa.

Chelsea are seeing positivity to return to the camp, following a dark winter, as their football looked more free-flowing in their first match at Craven Cottage for over five years.

They were helped by caretaker manager Scott Parker’s side producing yet another leaky defensive display, even if the fight on display pleased fans sick of Claudio Ranieri’s short-lived tenure.

Sarri’s in-form Chelsea are back, and Jorginho is increasingly looking like the midfielder that Blues fans hoped he would be. After his goal and high energy displays, the boo boys may have to find a new target.

Lionel Messi had blood in his mouth after a clash with Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos during Saturday’s La Liga Clasico, claims Gerard Pique.

Messi and Ramos were involved in a flashpoint in the first half of Barca’s 1-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu that moved Ernesto Valverde’s men 10 points clear at the top of the La Liga table.

Ramos knocked the ball past Messi but then seemed to thrust his arm into the face of the Barcelona captain, who made his displeasure clear to the officials, although Madrid’s skipper was not punished.

Former Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho used an appearance as a pundit on beIN Sports to intimate Ramos had deliberately hit Messi to spark life into his spluttering side.

Ramos denied that was the case in a post-match interview but the defender’s Spainteam-mate Pique was clear on who was to blame over the controversial incident.

“Leo had blood in his mouth,” said Pique. “It was an aggression.

“Intensity does not have to be measured. I get along great with the Real Madrid players.

“But when you go out to the field you defend your colours and the rivalry is what you get.

“But once the game is over, the cordiality is mutual, the players respect us very much.”

Barca also won at the Bernabeu on Wednesday, their 3-0 success at Madrid’s home booking a place in the final of the Copa del Rey for the sixth year in a row.

Valverde’s men have therefore made history by becoming the first team to win three consecutive away games against Madrid.

The Barca boss insists the title race is not over, with Atletico Madrid having a chance to move back within seven points of the leaders at Real Sociedad on Sunday.

But Pique knows Barcelona are well on track to defend their La Liga crown after another win at the Bernabeu.

“I have lived these games since I was a child,” added Pique. “I know how hard it is to win here, we knew how to suffer when we had to do it and we took advantage of our chance.

“I think we played better than the other day, even if the result is closer. It’s a boost for the league, it gives us a certain tranquility in the face of the next matches.”

Jose Mourinho accused Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos of deliberately hitting Lionel Messi before half-time during Saturday’s Clasico at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Barcelona claimed a 1-0 first-half lead thanks Ivan Rakitic’s delicate finish in the 26th minute but Mourinho felt the match lacked the customary intensity of European football’s fiercest rivalry.

Ramos caught Messi with a flailing arm, leaving the Barcelona superstar prone on the turf before he confronted his opponent and protested to the referee – Alberto Undiano Mallenco, who decided no action was necessary.

Speaking in his capacity as a pundit on beIN Sports, former Madrid boss Jose Mourinho suggested Ramos knew exactly what he was doing.

“I think in the first half, both teams when they had the ball, they did not hurt the opponent too much,” he said.

“There was no intensity on the defensive actions, with everybody playing in a low-medium block.

“It was not the temperature of a derby, of a Clasico that can settle the title.

“I think Sergio Ramos’ action probably is coming from a player that knows the game has to change.

“And probably he does it with the intention of creating a different temperature for the second half, because the game until then was really soft, in my opinion.”

Ramos is no stranger to on-field controversy in high-profile matches and was the subject of prolonged scrutiny after his tangle with Mohamed Salah during last season’s Champions League final left Liverpool’s star forward with an injury shoulder before Madrid secured a 3-1 win.

UEFA has banned the 32-year-old for two Champions League games after it ruled he deliberately got himself booked during last month’s first-leg win over Ajax in the last 16 in order to activate a yellow-card suspension.
